Assistant Professor/Head of Acquisitions (Southeastern Louisiana University, Louisiana)
HEAD OF ACQUISITIONS SIMS MEMORIAL LIBRARY Sims Memorial Library, Southeastern Louisiana University, seeks a creative, energetic, and flexible librarian for the position of Acquisitions Librarian. Southeastern is located in Hammond, in close proximity to New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and the Gulf Coast.
The Library is a member of LOUIS, a statewide network of academic libraries. Southeastern has an enrollment of over 15,000. This is a 12- month tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor. Responsibilities: The Head of Acquisitions plans and administers monograph acquisitions; works closely with Library Administration in monitoring the library’s budget; supervises and participates in pre-order verification, ordering, claiming, receiving, and paying of invoices; oversees approval plans; develops business relationships with vendors and publishers; monitors and evaluates vendor performance; manages gifts and donations; formulates acquisitions policies and procedures, supervises and co-ordinates the work of two library specialists and student workers in the Acquisitions area and promotes staff development. Assures the expenditure of all monies allocated by the State of Louisiana (state budgeted allocations), the Federal Government (grants awarded for specific uses), and Southeastern Louisiana Funds (i.e., Enhancements, Library Book Donations, Lost/Replacement Funds, etc.) used solely for the purchase of all types of library materials. Develops and documents policies, workflows and procedures with Acquisitions staff. Co-ordinates the ordering activities of the library faculty liaisons. The Acquisitions Librarian takes a lead role in the evaluation and efficient, innovative use of new technologies in a changing environment; undertakes studies and comparative analyses of techniques and methods for acquisition of library materials. Participates in planning and decision-making for the department and serves on library committees. Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent; Three years of professional experience in an academic library with at least one year of acquisitions experience or experience in maintaining a departmental budget; familiarity with issues, trends and operational needs of library acquisitions processes; knowledge of and experience in use of automated systems in libraries; ability to apply professional knowledge to the practical problems of the job; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a culturally diverse environment; effective oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with library staff at all levels; ability to work independently and collaboratively in a changing environment; experience in supervision and/or project or team leadership; ability to prioritize problems and solve them creatively and constructively. Desired Qualifications: A second master’s degree; familiarity with MARC formats, trends in technical services and automation; management experience.
